SUMMERVILLE, S.C. – The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office has identified the man fatally shot Wednesday afternoon following an altercation with an off-duty officer near Chick-Fil-A in Summerville.
At 1:23 p.m., Corner Darnell Hartwell said his office was notified of a shooting that occurred at 1312 North Main Street in Summerville that resulted in a death.
The victim, who is not law enforcement, has been identified as Michael P. O’Neal, 39, of North Carolina, he said.
Hartwell said O’Neal died from injuries sustained from a gunshot wound.
It’s not clear what led up to the shooting; however, Summerville police told several news outlets that an off-duty officer was involved in the altercation.
The shooting closed traffic for several hours from the I-26 overpass to Azalea Square Boulevard as the Summerville Police Department with the assistance of the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case.
His death is being investigated by the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
The Berkeley Observer will update this story as more information becomes available.
