Flash Flood Warning Issued For Berkeley County

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – The National Weather Service in Charleston has extended the flash flood warning in Berkeley County until 10:15 p.m. Friday.

Berkeley County has also transitioned back to OPCON 1 status with full activation of the emergency operations center.

A flash flood warning is issued when a flash flood is imminent or occurring. If you are in a flood-prone area move immediately to high ground. 

“A flash flood is a sudden violent flood that can take from minutes to hours to develop. It is even possible to experience a flash flood in areas not immediately receiving rain,” the National Weather Service reports.

At 6:25 p.m. doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Between 1 and 2 inches of rain
have fallen since late afternoon.

Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.

Water levels along French Quarter Creek near Huger in Berkeley County remain in the major flood category and several homes are flooded along the creek. This includes areas along French Quarter Creek Road.

Some locations that will experience flash flooding include Moncks Corner, Bonneau, Pinopolis, Southern Lake Moultrie, Old Santee Canal State Park, Bonneau Beach, Cross, Wampee, Sugar Hill and Simpson Crossing.

According to the National Weather Service, emergency management has already reported widespread flash flooding in Moncks Corner, including water rescues.
