BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – A man told deputies he ran from them because it was “his birthday,” according to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office.
DeShone Bernard Rivers, 28, was arrested Monday morning and charged with a slew of traffic-related charges.
Early Monday morning, a deputy was conducting traffic enforcement when he observed vehicles traveling toward him at a high rate of speed.
The deputy utilized his in-car radar and determined that both vehicles were traveling 96 miles per hour in a posted 65 mile per hour zone.
The deputy activated his emergency lights and sirens in an attempt to stop the vehicles. One vehicle pulled over but the other vehicle did not.
The other vehicle traveled onto N. Main Street and approached Sigma Drive.
The vehicle, driven by Rivers, failed to stop for deputies and then made a U-turn and headed back in the other direction. The vehicle then made several more U-turns in an attempt to lose the deputy.
The deputy continued to pursue the vehicle and as they approached College Park Road, other assisting deputies were able to set up stop-sticks. Both assisting deputies were able to get a successful stop stick hit on the right two tires of the vehicle.
Rivers drove for a few more miles and then came to a stop on Ladson Road at Old Trolly Road. Once the vehicle came to a stop, Rivers fled from the vehicle. After a short foot pursuit, Rivers was caught and placed under arrest.
A probable cause search of the vehicle Rivers was driving yielded 12 grams of marijuana and an open bottle of tequila. A license check of Rivers showed that his license was suspended, and this would be his second Driving Under Suspension offense in the last five years.
Rivers was arrested and charged with Failure to Stop for Blue Lights, Reckless Driving, Driving Under Suspension second offense and Unlawful Transportation of Liquor.
When deputies asked Rivers why he ran, he stated that it was his birthday, and he was just trying to get home, according to BCSO.
