EDGEFIELD, S.C. – A Moncks Corner man is facing multiple charges in connection with a child’s death, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
On Friday, SLED agents charged Caleb Jochen Carter, 30, with two counts of unlawfully placing a child at risk of or causing harm or willfully abandoning the child.
An affidavit revealed that on or about July 28, 2020 – Oct. 13, 2020 in Edgefield County, Carter allowed an unsafe mouthpiece to be placed in the child’s mouth, which resulted in upper airway obstruction and ultimately death.
The document also stated that Carter, whether acting alone or in concert with another, inflicted or allowed multiple injuries to the child. The child was found with bruising to various body parts, including the cheek, eye, ear, and jaw.
Carter had “charge or custody” of the young victim and was responsible for the child’s warfare, according to the affidavit.
SLED did not reveal the age of the child.
Carter was booked into the Edgefield County Detention Center.
The case will be prosecuted by the 11th Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
