BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office has identified the two woman who died in a three-car crash in Summerville.
On Monday around 4:34 a.m. Coroner Darnell Hartwell said his office was notified of a multiple-vehicle traffic accident on Highway 17A near the Sangaree Parkway.
Hartwell said one woman was confirmed deceased on scene and another woman was transported to a nearby emergency room where she was later pronounced deceased.
Brianna Barnum, 28, of Saint Stephen was the sole occupant of a 2018 Volkswagen. She was pronounced deceased on scene from the fatal injuries sustained in the collision.
Miriam Frausto, 36, of North Charleston was the sole occupant of a 2013 Buick Enclave. She was transported to a local hospital where she was later pronounced deceased from fatal injuries sustained in the collision.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, a third vehicle, a 2016 GMC SUV, was involved in the crash. However, that driver was not injured.
Prior to the fatal collision, troopers say Barnum and the driver of the GMC were both driving south on Highway 17A. Frausto traveled north on the highway but did so in the southbound lanes.
As a result, Frausto and Barnum’s vehicles collided, and the driver of the GMC hit Barnum’s car from behind.
Berkeley County EMS, Berkeley County Sherriff’s Office, South Carolina Highway Patrol and Pine Ridge Fire & Rescue responded to this incident.
This case is being investigated by the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
