BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – Portions of Berkeley County transformed into a frigid winter wonderland starting Tuesday, forcing schools, municipalities, some businesses and roads to shut down out of an abundance of caution.

According to the National Weather Service, Berkeley County experienced as much as six inches of snow on the ground as of Wednesday.

Berkeley County experienced snow flurries last in 2022. Before that, snow blanketed the area in 2018.

Here’s a look at some of the snowfall reported in the area this time around:

LOCATIONSNOWFALL (INCHES)
Cross6 inches
Sangaree4.5 inches
Moncks Corner4 inches
Goose Creek4 inches
Hanahan4 inches
Huger3 inches

A large and unseasonably strong upper trough encompassed much of the northern half of the United States, allowing arctic high pressure to expand south to the Gulf of Mexico and into the
Southeast United States.

Even with freezing temperatures ranging from highs in the low 30s and then dipping to the teens at night, it did not stop many residents from embracing the rare phenomenon. From building snowmen to creating snow angels, Berkeley County residents welcomed the snow despite the bitter cold.
