BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office said it’s seen an increase in disabled vehicles during the winter storm.
The primary call for service that deputies are responding to are collisions and vehicles that have slid off of the road and into a ditch.
“Although the roads may seem clear of snow, we are responding to many calls that involve icy roads.” Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis stated. “Black ice is dangerous because it’s nearly invisible and can catch even the most experienced drivers off guard.”
Sheriff Lewis said he has staffed extra deputies to assist the public with any traffic emergencies or calls for service, but his office still stresses the importance of staying home.
From midnight on January 22 until now, deputies have responded to 43 calls regarding a disabled
vehicle, 14 calls for collisions and two calls about an abandoned vehicle.
Deputies have also continued to respond to typical calls for service like alarms, assaults, domestic disturbances, extra patrols, welfare checks, theft, and high visibility patrols.
