Berkeley County Deputies Target Speeders in Week-Long Blitz

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit recently conducted a week-long traffic enforcement operation targeting traffic violations in residential neighborhoods.

From March 31 to April 4, deputies conducted proactive patrols in several neighborhoods, including all subdivisions within Cane Bay, as well as Nexton, Sangaree, Hunters Bend, Tall Pines, Treeland, College Park Estates, St. James Estates, Sedgefield, and Foster Creek.

The initiative focused on enhancing roadway safety, increasing awareness, and reducing dangerous driving behaviors within our communities.

“This operation reflects our continued commitment to making our neighborhoods safer,” stated Sheriff Duane Lewis. “We’ve heard the concerns from the community, and we’re taking action to ensure that drivers are held accountable and that our streets are safe for everyone.”

During the traffic operation, there were 325 citations written. Those charges included speeding, seatbelt violations, driving without a license, expired license tag, driving under suspension, driving without a driver’s license, disregarding a stop sign, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, child restraint violations, failure to return a suspended license plate, unlawful passing, reckless driving, disregarding a traffic control device, window tint violations, following too closely, careless driving, passing a stopped school bus, open container of alcohol, violation of beginners permit, improper display of a license plate and operating an unsafe motor vehicle.

There were 252 warnings issued for traffic violations.

There were 12 criminal cases made. Those included four Possession of a Controlled Substance cases, two Fugitive from Justice cases, one Failure to Stop for Blue Lights case, one Possession with the Intent to Distribute Marijuana case, one Trafficking Cocaine case, one Possession of a Weapon during a Violent Crime case, one Felon in Possession of a Firearm case, and one Habitual Traffic Offender case.

The Berkeley County Traffic Unit towed six cars during the operation.

The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office conducts random traffic operations to proactively address traffic violations and enhance roadway safety for all residents. These efforts help deter reckless driving and respond to community concerns in high-traffic and residential areas.
