BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–By unanimous vote, the Berkeley County Board of Education has selected Brenda Blackburn as the district’s new superintendent.

Blackburn is currently superintendent of Montgomery County Public Schools, a 9,600 student district in Christiansburg, Va. Prior to this post, she served as an Area Superintendent and an Associate Superintendent for Brevard Public

Schools, a 75,000 student district in Viera, Fl.

“Our entire Board was very pleased with Ms. Blackburn’s skills and experiences,” said Berkeley County Board of Education Chairman, Jim Hayes. “She possesses so many of the qualities outlined in our community and staff written leadership profile. She also has strong experience in areas our district currently faces and will face in the future.”

Blackburn was one of three recent finalists selected in July by the Board. All three finalists spent a day in the district last week touring schools, meeting employees and members of the community, and undergoing a second extensive interview with the Board. Other finalists were Dr. Sam DePaul, a Georgia superintendent, and Dr. Jerome Stewart, a recent superintendent in Texas.

“All three finalists were excellent candidates. We believe, however, that Ms. Blackburn is the best fit for Berkeley County,” said Hayes. “She also received very favorable reviews from staff and community members who interacted with her last week.”

Blackburn has served as Montgomery County Superintendent since March 2010. Prior to serving as Area Superintendent and Associate Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction in Florida’s Brevard Public Schools, she also served in that district as a Dean of Students, Assistant Principal, and Principal. Prior to these administrative experiences, she was a high school counselor and history teacher in other districts.

Blackburn will assume her duties as Berkeley County School District’s new superintendent Nov. 1.

“Selecting our next superintendent has been an important process for the Board, and we believe we have found an outstanding leader. We are very appreciative of the employee and community support we have received throughout our search, and we are looking forward to a great future for our district under Ms. Blackburn’s leadership,” said Hayes.
