GOOSE CREEK, S.C.–The City of Goose Creek has lost a lifelong public servant who always put others ahead of herself.
Nancy Trevino, a member of the Goose Creek Recreation Commission for over 30 years, died on Monday, Oct. 10. She was 78.
The current vice chairman of the Recreation Commission, Mrs. Trevino was one of the founders of the commission’s booster club. She was appointed to the commission in 1983, serving as its treasurer before becoming vice chairman.
“Nancy was so focused on the community,” Goose Creek Recreation Supervisor Cheryl Heiselman said. “She always would say, ‘Is this what’s best for the kids?’ That’s what she thought about.”
Goose Creek Recreation Director Gary Stuber met Mrs. Trevino in 1985. “She was one of those people who took care of everybody,” he said. “She loved recreation. She loved that the kids had some place to go.
“She always put others first.”
Stuber said that the longtime Goose Creek resident’s energy was limitless: “We’d have a three or four-hour meeting, and she’d go get another cup of coffee. She never got tired.”
“She was always concerned about the staff,” Heiselman said. “She was always making sure that we were okay. She stayed involved way after her own children were grown. She was just one of those dedicated people who come along in a lifetime and really make an impact.”
Goose Creek Mayor Michael Heitzler praised Mrs. Trevino for her “countless hours of volunteering.”
“I consider the Trevino family, Nancy and Gil and their children, as a foundation family for Goose Creek,” Mayor Heitzler said. “Nancy was instrumental in founding the Foxborough Garden Club, and the Neighborhood Crime Watch. She was active in the PTA.
“She had one goal: to make Goose Creek a better place to raise a family, and a great place for children to thrive. Bloomberg Business Magazine recently cited Goose Creek as the best place to raise children. I consider Nancy Trevino and so many citizens like her to be responsible for that accolade.”
Mrs. Trevino and her husband, Gil, attended Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Mr. and Mrs. Trevino had two sons.
Arrangements are under the direction of Carolina Funeral Home in North Charleston.
