Person Who Led Berkeley County Deputies On Chase Dies After Striking Tree

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–One person is dead following a high speed chase that ended in Charleston County after the driver struck a tree, according to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.

Shortly before 11:00 p.m., Major Eric Watson stated that deputies with the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to investigate a fatal collision that occurred on Highway 78 near Von Oshen Road.

According to preliminary reports, Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office deputies were engaged in a vehicle pursuit on Hwy 78, after the driver of a Champagne in color Chevrolet Impala, evaded a check point at the C&B Fire Department on Royle Road being conducted by South Carolina Highway Patrol and Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office.

BCSO Chief Deputy Mike Cochran stated that a deputy in a fully marked patrol vehicle went down Kimball Lane and located the Chevrolet Impala turning around at the end of the road in the cul-de-sac.

Cochran stated that the deputy attempted to stop the Impala as it was on Kimball Lane; however, the Impala’s driver disregarded the deputy’s attempts to stop the vehicle.

The Impala then turned off of Kimball Lane turning towards Royle Road. The deputy activated his siren and continued with the blue lights, these efforts were not effective in getting the vehicle to stop.

The deputy continued to follow the Impala as it continued down Royle Road and onto Highway 78. The Impala continued down Highway 78 towards Summerville with the deputy behind it with its lights and siren activated.

The Impala lost control on Highway 78 near Rusty’s Driving School and collided with a 2017 Volkswagen Jetta before it the Impala went off the left side of the road and struck a tree.

The driver of the Jetta was transported to a local hospital for treatment to non-life-threatening injuries. When deputies went to render aid to the driver of the Impala, the driver was determined to be deceased, Cocharan added.

The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, will be identified by the Charleston County Coroner’s Office.
