BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–According to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, thanks to tips from the community, a dangerous fugitive and sex offender is behind bars.
Roy Dewayne Wilson, a wanted fugitive, has been arrested after nearly a decade of being wanted, deputies stated.
In November 2016 , the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office received a tip from the public that a wanted subject, Roy Dewayne Wilson, 49, was in the Bonneau area of Berkeley County. Wilson, was wanted for failing to register as a sex offender.
Those charges stemmed from Wilson violating his sex offender registry requirements by leaving the state of SC. A warrant for Wilson was issued in January of 2007.
Detectives with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office and the United States Marshals Task force followed up on the tip and after weeks of investigating, detectives located a residence on Cane Gully Road, where Wilson was living.
On Friday, December 9, 2016, Sheriff’s Office Detectives and Members of the U.S. Marshals Task force observed Wilson leave a residence and enter a vehicle. Detectives initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle while it was traveling on Bethera Road.
Wilson made an attempt to conceal his identity by providing a false name, However, Wilson was taken into custody and transported to the Hill Finklea Detention Center.
Wilson was also wanted on sex offender charges from Haven Oaks, FL and Polk County, FL. Detectives are working to file additional charges on Wilson for living in the county without registering as a sex offender.
U.S. Marshals Task Force, Operation Intercept was formed in 1986 and is one of the oldest Marshals Service task forces. It is comprised of Deputy United States Marshals, Agents from Homeland Security, Detectives from the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, Charleston City Police Department, Charleston County Sheriff’s Office and North Charleston Police Department.
