GOOSE CREEK, S.C.–For the first time in nearly 40 years, the City of Goose Creek officially has a new mayor.
Greg Habib was elected mayor on Tuesday, April 3rd.
The city councilman recently won a four-year term with 1,614 votes (51.04 percent) to incumbent Mayor Michael Heitzler’s 1,544 votes (48.83 percent).
Heitzler had previously served as the city’s mayor since 1978.
Habib, who has served on city council since 2016, was officially sworn in as mayor Thursday night at city hall.
In the city council election for three seats, the winners were Jerry Tekac with 1,741 votes (19.66 percent), Corey McClary with 1,690 votes (19.08 percent) and incumbent Debra Green-Fletcher with 1,546 votes (17.46 percent).
Tekac, McClary and Green-Fletcher were also sworn in Thursday night.
They will also serve four-year terms on city council.
A total of 3,173 ballots were cast this year, representing 13.29 percent of Goose Creek’s 23,875 registered voters. It was the city’s largest voter turnout.
