BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–The Berkeley County School District (BCSD) Board of Education confirmed Dr. Dawn Smith, current Assistant Principal for Athletics at Hanahan High, as the new principal of Berkeley Middle College (BMC) at their meeting Tuesday evening. Smith will begin her new assignment immediately to prepare for the upcoming school year. BMC Principal Claire Freeman retired at the conclusion of the 2017-2018 school year.

“I am really excited to work with the staff, students, parents, and Berkeley Middle College community,” said Dr. Smith. “It is imperative that we provide our students with every opportunity and present all options to ensure their future success, and I am committed to working with the BMC students and parents to identify college and career pathways that will satisfy each individual’s talents and serve their best interests. I am blessed to have the opportunity to be a part of such an innovative and progressive program here in Berkeley County.”

Smith joined BCSD as a teacher at Berkeley High School in 1998, investing the past 20 years in public education. After serving two years as an assistant principal at Myrtle Beach Middle in Horry County, Smith returned to BCSD in 2006 as an assistant principal for curriculum and instruction at Berkeley High School. Most recently, Smith has worked to ensure eligibility with the SCHSL and NCAA compliance for over 450 student-athletes as Hanahan High’s assistant principal for athletics. Along with many other administrator duties, Smith was also responsible for maintaining and administering discipline, AIP’s and IEP’s in compliance with federal, state and local policies and procedures for a caseload of 250 students.

“BCSD is fortunate to have a leader with such a diverse resume,” said BCSD Superintendent Dr. Eddie Ingram. “Dr. Smith has demonstrated throughout her career that she is committed to helping our students become successful, no matter what success may look like for each individual child. She has been a teacher, a coach, a program facilitator, an administrator and, more importantly, someone that our children could count on to help them achieve their goals. We are confident that Dr. Smith will lead BMC with integrity and passion and will work to ensure that our students there are both college and career ready.”

Berkeley Middle College High School is designed for students who want to get a head start on their college careers and for those who may not have performed to their full potential in a traditional high school setting.
