BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Foxbank Elementary in Moncks Corner is gearing up for the new 2018-2019 school year. On Monday it welcomed students for the very first time. Just one day prior, the community celebrated the completion of the school with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The initial enrollment for the first day of school is projected to be around 750 students.
Natalie Lockliear will serve as the school’s principal. She previously served as the principal of Bonner Elementary School for the past 10 years. She has also worked for the district for the past 25 years in various capacities as principal, assistant principal and district office evaluator.
Lockliear said she looks forward to being able to start a new school and learn a new community.
“I think the most important thing is to make sure all the kids get there and they feel safe,” Lockliear said of what she visions of her initial days in the role. “They need to have a great beginning. This is going to be an exciting time for them, coming into a new school – some of them their first day in a school, period.”
Foxbank Elementary will be a STEAM school with a specialized focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math.
The school itself features a centralized pre-kindergarten playground and courtyard for the students to enjoy. There is also a centralized media center that was designed to be a focal point, and includes collaborative spaces, a computer room, conference room and media studio.
Another exciting element of the school is the implementation of a “Makerspace” that will allow students to explore and create. The school’s media specialist brings with her a strong journalism background and education experiences that will benefit both our students and our community.
Currently, the number of teachers slated to teach at Foxbank Elementary is approximately 45. Additional staff will be added as the school needs are determined. On average, the Berkeley County School District has implemented a 25:1 ratio of students to teachers for second through fifth grade, a 18:1 ratio of students to teachers for first grade, and a 24:1 ratio of students to teacher and assistant in kindergarten.
