MONCKS CORNER, S.C.–Berkeley Electric Cooperative is ready and waiting for Florence to arrive, according to BEC spokesperson Leisa Stilley. Preparations have been made for the worst case scenario, however, officials say they have the means to quickly take care of its members and then send mutual aid on further north.
“We anticipate flooding will be our greatest concern and obstacle. We encourage our members to download the SmartHub app to report their outages directly into the outage system which clears up phone lines for other emergency calls,” explained Dwayne Cartwright, CEO.

Another great feature is that if you leave, you can check to see if your power is out and if it’s been restored, added Cartwright.
All offices will remain open and fully staffed, prepared to handle the needs of the members. Any closing decisions will be made after the extent of damage can be determined.
Stilley stated that the agency continues to encourage everyone to complete their storm preparations.
As Florence approaches to stay off the roads, if at all possible, to prevent car-pole accidents due to weather hazards and to avoid fallen poles and trees. Always stay in your vehicles and well clear of downed power lines.
Any hazardous conditions, such as downed lines, should be reported immediately to the Cooperative at 1-888-253-4232.
Berkeley Electric Cooperative is a member-owned, Touchstone Energy Cooperative and provides power to the Lowcountry in Berkeley, Dorchester and Charleston County. Powering 99,000 meters and 5,500 miles of line.
