Arrest Made in Murder of St. Stephen Man Found Dead in Trunk of Car

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis announced Thursday that an arrest has been made relating to the death of Richard Patterson, 24, of St. Stephen. Patterson was discovered in the rear of a vehicle off of Mendel Rivers Road in St Stephen.

On the afternoon of Tuesday, October 23rd Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to 836 Tairney Lane in St Stephen regarding an abandoned vehicle parked on a side road. Prior to the arrival of deputies, the property owner where the vehicle was parked located a set of keys to the vehicle. When he checked the vehicle he found a male subject in the cargo area that was not alive. The responding deputy arrived shortly thereafter.

Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office detectives and Crime Scene units arrived and processed the scene. Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury later identified the deceased person as Richard Patterson. According to Salisbury, the victim died from a gunshot wound.

“Detectives have been working around the clock to solve this murder, they have been exhausting all leads in order to get answers for the Patterson family, a special thanks to the many citizens who provided information on this case,” Sheriff Duane Lewis stated.

This afternoon Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office detectives located and arrested Richard Elliott Sanders, 33, of Shadetree Lane in St Stephen. He was transported to the Hill Finklea Detention Center to await warrant service and a bond hearing.
