BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Friends and family will soon celebrate the life of a Berkeley County man who recently vanished at sea when the plane that he was on lost contact and disappeared from radar.
Jamie Mitchum, Jr., 58, of St. Stephen along with four other people were last seen alive on October 25, 2018. All five people on board were in route to the Bahamas.
The U.S. Coast Guard spent three days searching for a downed civilian aircraft approximately 110 miles east of Charleston. The search, however, yielded no signs of the plane or possible survivors.
“It is with a heavy heart that we suspend our search for the missing aircraft and its five passengers,” said Capt. John Reed, Commander, Sector Charleston. “I have spoken with the family of those that were on this plane and extend my deepest sympathies to them and all those who have been hit by this tragic loss at sea.”
Mitchum was a licensed helicopter and airplane pilot, and he also volunteered with the Berkeley County Rescue Squad.
He is survived by his wife, son and daughter.
A celebration of his life will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Sunday, November 4, 2018, in the Northwood Academy Gymnasium, 104 Charger Dr., Summerville, SC, with the service beginning at 5:00 p.m. Condolences may be sent to the family at PO Box 777, Bonneau, SC 29431.
