MONCKS CORNER, S.C.—A substitute teacher faced a judge in bond court Wednesday evening following charges by police that she assaulted a young student.
On April 4, 2019, the Moncks Corner Police Department began an investigation regarding the incident that occurred on a male student by Melody Durant, 48, of Jamestown at Foxbank Elementary School in Moncks Corner.
Police say the student, a 5-year-old boy, suffered minor injury.
When an officer met with the principal, he was shown a video of an incident that occurred in the media center of the school just one day prior.
In the video, the boy appeared to have gotten into a small pushing match with another student over seating in the library area. Police say Durant is then seen grabbing the child from his seat.
According to the police report, Durant continues by yanking up on the child’s right arm and pulls him around, at one point pulling him so far vertically that his feet, if not completely, come off of the floor.
A nearby witness reportedly came over to calm the situation. Durant and the child were then separated.
The principal told police that Durant was removed from the classroom as soon as she was made aware of the situation.
After conducting a complete investigation, the Moncks Corner Police Department arrested Durant
Durant, who worked at the school as a substitute teacher through Kelly Services, has been charged with 3rd Degree Assault in the case.
She appeared in bond court Wednesday evening and was released on a personal recognizance bond.
