BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–A bad wreck along the intersection of Highway 41
and Reflectance Drive sent four people to the hospital on Friday with serious and critical injuries, according to first responders with Cainhoy Fire & Rescue.
Firefighters say that when they responded to the scene, they found two vehicles with heavy damage, including one that was overturned.
After further assessment of the scene, crews found four patients suffering from a variety of injuries. According to Cainhoy Fire & Rescue, one of the patients was found to be heavily entrapped in the overturned vehicle.
Crews stabilized the overturned vehicle and began extrication. While crews worked to extricate the entrapped patient, the other three patients were all transported by EMS units to the trauma center, one in critical condition and two in serious condition.
Cainhoy and Charleston firefighters worked for an extended time to free the entrapped patient from the overturned vehicle. Once extricated, crews say the patient was transported to a landing zone that was set up on Jack Primus Road at Clements Ferry Road, and flown to the trauma center in critical condition.
Crews remained on scene for an extended time with Highway 41 and the Reflectance Drive/Halfway Creek Road intersection shut down while law enforcement investigated the accident. The intersection remained closed until just before 3 a.m. Saturday.
Cainhoy Fire Department, City of Charleston Fire Department, Berkeley County EMS, Charleston Police, and Berkeley County Sheriff’s Deputies all responded to the scene.
According to the Charleston Police Department, the accident occurred when a 2009 Honda sedan traveling north on SC-41 struck a 2002 Volkswagen sedan who disregarded a stop sign before entering the intersection.
The Honda sedan and Volkswagen sedan were both occupied by two individuals. All four occupants were transported to the Medical University of South Carolina following the collision. Three of those individuals remain hospitalized in critical condition including a four-year old.
“This tragic collision is another reminder of the importance of the ongoing Arrive Alive campaign. Drivers are asked to slow down, pay attention, and always wear a seat belt. This is the second serious-injury collision to take place at this intersection in the last two months,” stated Lieutenant Matthew T. Wojslawowicz with CPD. “On March 15, 2019, the Charleston Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team responded to this same intersection to investigate a different collision where a driver failed to stop at the stop sign on Halfway Creek Road and was struck by a motorist traveling northbound on SC-41.”
