MONCKS CORNER, S.C.– Rembert C. Dennis Boulevard, from Stoney Landing Road to US 52, in Moncks Corner temporarily closed as crews investigated a chemical spill in the area Tuesday afternoon.
According to Moncks Corner Fire Chief Robert Gass, crews initially responded to what was believed to be an oil spill along the Highway 52 Bypass, around 1:30 p.m.
“When the crews arrived, they found out that it was not oil,” stated Grass. “They cordoned off the area. The Moncks Corner Police Department re-routed traffic.”
Rather than oil, Gass said the chemical on the roadway was actually Therminol VP1, a substance used to stabilize other chemicals.
The North Charleston Fire Department sent a hazmat team to assist Berkeley County crews at the scene. Berkeley County EMS and the South Carolina Transport Police were also on hand.
Santee Cooper, Berkeley Electric Coop and Berkeley Intermediate were all put on an administrative lockdown until crews determined if the substance was hazardous.
Moncks corner Inn as well as homeowners located on Barony Street
were told to evacuate as a precautionary measure.
“The situation was taken care of rather quickly,” stated Gass. “A clean up company will take care of the residue left over. The only real problem from this has been the traffic headaches from re-routing folks around we pretty much have everything taken care of.”
According to Gass, there were no injuries following Tuesday’s chemical spill along the Highway 52 Bypass.
