BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – Jered Crosby wanted to do a lesson on random acts of kindness with his students.
This recent lesson resulted in Crosby’s homeroom students creating 72 “homeless car kits” last week that they will pass on to people in need.
Crosby, a seventh-grade science teacher at College Park Middle, has a brother who works for the national company Thrivent, which offers grants geared toward service projects. Crosby wrote to the company explaining an interest in doing something with his students, and he received a $250 grant. He used the money to purchase items for these kits.
His homeroom class then assembled the bags. Each bag includes a toothbrush, toothpaste, crackers, a bag of M&Ms, mints, a pair of socks, a small water bottle, a Slim Jim, baby wipes and handwarmers.
In addition to the kit items, students also wrote little notes with well wishes to those who ever receive a bag.
As part of this lesson on random acts of kindness, Crosby asked his blended distance learning students to provide their own definition of the term, and they listed examples on how to give back as well (see some of their answers below).
Each student took about three bags home with them; Crosby said the students will hold onto the bags until they are out and about and see someone outside of school who could maybe make use of the bag’s items (the idea is to keep the bags in their parents’ cars and distribute them while they’re out with their parents).
One of his students, Madison Karcher, already had a successful delivery; was recently on her way to Walmart when she noticed a man on the side of the road near the store’s parking lot. She got out of the car, asked the man how his day was going, and ended up giving him a bag.
“He was really excited,” she said, adding, “It made me feel really good that I was able to help somebody…it just made me really happy.”
Crosby said one of the things he discussed with his students is how to go about offering the bags to people, because maybe a kit is not something a person wants and they’ll instead decline the offer – “but that shouldn’t deter us from trying to do good,” he said.
Crosby hopes to do another service project with his students in the future.
“This will not be a one-time thing,” he said.
