On Monday, South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson announced the arrest of 48-year-old Stephen Thomas Hammond of Columbia. According to Wilson’s office, Hammond faces six counts involving sexual exploitation of minors. The Richland County Sheriff’s Department, a member of the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, reportedly made the arrest.
Wilson stated that the arrest was made possible with the help of the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office. The attorney general stated that BCSO, also a member of the ICAC Task Force, notified authorities in the midlands that images depicting children engaged in sexual activity had been distributed from an account traced to Hammond’s home.
A search warrant was executed on May 15, 2014 by officers from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department. Hammond was then arrested and transported to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
If convicted, Hammond could face up to ten years in prison for each charge. Bond was set at $25,000.
The case will be prosecuted by the Attorney General’s Office.
Wilson stressed that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
