MONCKS CORNER, S.C. – A man is facing multiple felony charges following a fatal crash Wednesday that killed two people and injured several others on U.S. Hwy. 17A in Moncks Corner, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Joseph Lewis Hass, 23, of Moncks Corner has been charged with two counts of felony DUI with death and one count of felony DUI resulting in great bodily injury.

The crash happened around 9 p.m. near Singleton Lane.

According to troopers, a 2009 Chevy pickup pulling a utility trailer was traveling south on Hwy. 17A when it was struck in the rear by a 2010 Volkswagon. This caused the Chevy to veer to the left of the lane, cross the center line and strike a 2020 Buick SUV.

A 2009 Ford sedan, which was traveling north on Hwy. 17A, then struck the 2009 Chevy pickup.

The Volkswagen ultimately ran into a ditch.

The driver of the sedan and its two passengers were transported to a local hospital. A fourth passenger was not injured, troopers said. The driver of the Chevy pickup was also transported to a local hospital.

The passenger and driver of the 2020 Buick SUV were pronounced dead, the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office said.

Chief Deputy Coroner Darnell Hartwell identified the victims as Rosa Wilson, 65, of Andrews and Mizzie Wilson, 43, of Andrews.

The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol continue to investigate.

Troopers did not specifically say which vehicle Hass had been traveling in at the time of the crash.
