Court records show that DeWitt was released from jail Wednesday on his own personal recognizance, which means he did not have to post bail.
In 2016, the former, longtime sheriff pleaded guilty to DUI and failure to comply with law enforcement.
A judge sentenced DeWitt to three years probation and 60 hours of community service. He was also required to attend two Alcoholics Anonymous meetings per week.
The sentencing came after South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers said that DeWitt hit another vehicle, fled the scene and then led officers on a high-speed chase traveling more than 100 miles per hour in 2014.
Following the incident, DeWitt resigned from office in Feb. 2015 after having served as Berkeley County sheriff since 1995.
DeWitt currently serves as board chairman and District 3 trustee for Berkeley Electric Cooperative, according to the company’s website. He also works for a funeral home in Moncks Corner.
