The South Carolina Department of Public Safety has announced that five people were killed on South Carolina roadways over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. None of those fatalities were in Berkeley County.
Preliminary numbers show this year’s Memorial Day weekend had the fewest traffic deaths since at least 1984.
In 2013, twelve fatalities were recorded over the weekend holiday period. In addition, preliminary numbers show there was one motorcyclist fatality this Memorial Day holiday weekend, compared to six in 2013 and four in 2012. Early numbers show that there were zero motorcycle fatalities in Horry County during the two annual spring bike rallies.
As of May 26, 275 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 286 highway deaths during the same time period in 2013.
Of the 198 motor vehicle occupants who have died in 2014, 98 were not wearing seat belts.
Through midnight May 26, 33 pedestrians, 26 motorcyclists and three bicyclists have died on state roads and highways.
