MONCKS CORNER, S.C. – The Moncks Corner Police Department is asking the public’s help in finding the driver of a white Buick Lacrosse accused of striking a female motorcyclist and leaving the scene of the crash. The victim, a U.S. Navy veteran, was seriously injured, police said.

The collision happened April 3 around 7:45 p.m. at the Hwy. 52 and Oakley Road intersection. A few days ago, police released a flyer of what the car may look like.

“The vehicle involved will have damage to the passenger rear door and rear fender. The vehicle will also be missing its fuel filler door, right rear taillight assembly and rear lower bumper skin,” MCPD said.

According to the victim’s family, Tonya Wright was riding her motorcycle home from bible study when a white car pulled out in front of her, in turn, causing her to strike the rear end of the car. Wright found herself lying in the road of a four-lane highway.

“The worst part is the driver of the car never stopped,” her family posted to Wright’s GoFundMe page. “They left this vibrant, young lady in the road. They left her for dead! About five or six cars drove past her before a Good Samaritan stopped and called 911.”

Wright’s family describes her injuries as severe and said she has a long road to recovery. She also has a 15-inch gash in her leg and her kneecap and related tendons are completely gone. Doctors are currently trying to save one of her badly injured legs.

“Tonya’s doctors are trying their best to allow her to keep her leg and to give her some level of normal usage. The current concerns are for infection,” they said. “She has undergone many surgeries to ensure an infection does not take hold. Once the doctors are confident her leg can survive, they will start the long process of giving her back some use of her leg. These surgeries will involve more reconstruction as well as multiple skin grafts to replace the badly damaged and infected skin.”

Because Wright’s medical bills are mounting, her family has launched a GoFundMe page to help cover some of her expenses. As of Tuesday, the online fundraising site has generated almost $18,000. To donate, click here.
