Firefighter Suffers Heat Exhaustion After Battling Cane Bay House Fire

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – A Berkeley County firefighter was transported to a local hospital after suffering heat exhaustion symptoms following a house fire in the Cane Bay community in Summerville.

According to Central Berkeley Fire & EMS, firefighters responded to a house fire in the 200-block of Lucca Drive shortly after 2 p.m. on Wednesday.

Crews arrived on scene and found a two-story, single-family dwelling with heavy smoke and fire conditions in the attic area.

Firefighters worked aggressively to contain the fire, which was unoccupied at the time. The fire was placed under control at 3:30 p.m.

Efforts were made to help preserve the homeowner’s belongings, firefighters said.

Ten fire departments helped extinguish the fire in the house. Berkeley County Emergency Medical Services and Berkeley County Emergency Management also responded to the scene.

“We would like to thank our amazing Mutual Aid partners who provided assistance to not only this call, but also to a second structure fire and a report of a person struck by lightning (unfounded) that was dispatched within a 16-minute window,” Central Berkeley Fire & EMS posted to Facebook.

The one firefighter who experienced heat exhaustion symptoms was transported by EMS as a precautionary measure, officials said. No injuries were reported.
