Hanahan Police Chief Dennis Turner To Retire

HANAHAN, S.C. – After 25 years of law enforcement service, Hanahan Police Chief Dennis Turner announced Monday plans to retire, effective Sept. 15, 2023.

“Having started my career here, I believe it is only fitting that I retire my badge here, as well,” Turner posted to Facebook. “During my time as Chief, my goal has been to focus on community policing efforts and to invest in and support the brave men and women of this department. I look forward to seeing what the future holds for them.”

Turner was promoted to Hanahan police chief in Aug. 2015, replacing Michael Cochran who had served in that role for several years before joining the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office as chief deputy.

For more than two decades, Turner worked as a police officer in Hanahan, rising through the ranks of corporal, sergeant, detective sergeant, lieutenant and ultimately chief.

Last year, he was briefly placed in an administrative role to assist the interim city administrator.

“When I put on my uniform as a Hanahan Police Officer in 1998, I had no idea how much I would grow to love this city and its people,” Dennis said. “During the course of my law enforcement career with the City of Hanahan, I have had some rewarding experiences and opportunities (to include my time at the FBI National Academy), and I consider myself fortunate to have worked with some amazing professionals along the way.”

Earlier this month, Turner announced the promotion of long-time Hanahan officer Cassie Brooks to assistant police chief.
