BONNEAU, S.C. –Bathing suits, beer and fun in the sun–three things folks have come to associate with Coonfest which gets underway on July 26th on Lake Moultrie.

“We have come a long way in six years,” said Iain Hamilton, the event’s founder.  “There’s been a lot of hard work,  generosity from our sponsors and we get an awesome crowd every year.”

Founded in 2009,  Hamilton says he started Coonfest during a time when Berkeley County was struggling economically and Lake Moultrie appeared to be drying up.

“The country was in a recession, and the people were in depression,” added Hamilton.  “And in 2007,  the lake was at its lowest level in 50 years–which hurt businesses and towns all around the lake. A lot of revenue is generated through the use of Lake Moultrie from fishing, camping, boating.”

Hamliton says he wanted to do his part to help the local economy.

While with his friend on the lake one day, Hamilton says he realized that this would be the perfect place to have an entertainment event–especially since he already had a boat to hold the live music.

“With a houseboat named Swamp Fox at our disposal, we decided a band could easily fit on top and be out on the lake,” said Hamilton.  “It also gives people something to look forward to every year, something they can call their own festival.”

Hamilton says most of  the funds generated from the event go right back into the local economy by way of charity.

“It is a huge social event with live music and concessions,” stated Hamilton.  “This year we have the Shriners doing hot dogs and burgers, and as everyone knows their proceeds will go to children’s hospitals.”

This year’s event will feature live music by the Corbitt Brother’s Band.  The very first Coonfest attracted 75 boats and around 300 people. Last year, Hamilton says the event brought in around 750 boats and 6,000 people.

“It appears we are doing something right, and I am trying every year to make it more fun for everyone,” said Hamilton.

The event starts at 12 p.m. and goes until 6 p.m.  The Berkeley County Rescue Squad, Berkeley Co. Sheriff’s Office and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources will be on hand to make sure everyone stays safe.

Hamilton is asking that folks refrain from bringing glass bottles to Coon Island.

“And teach your children to swim! Be safe out there ya”ll,” he added.
