BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.—According to officials with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, a trooper arrested Melanie Maguire, 38, for a fatal wreck that occurred while she was driving under the influence.
Authorities stated that Maguire and her passenger were driving east on Cooper Store Road around 5:00 p.m. Thursday when she ran off the left side of the highway, hit a ditch and then overturned.
Troopers said that Maguire was wearing her seatbelt and was not injured in the accident; however, the passenger was partially ejected from Maguire’s 2002 Ford pickup truck.
Berkeley Co. Coroner Bill Salisbury has identified the passenger as 36-year-old Christopher Hearn of Summerville.
Salisbury stated that Hearn was extricated by the fire department and flown by helicopter to MUSC where he was pronounced dead at 7:52 p.m. The coroner added that he was not wearing a seatbelt.
Maguire was booked into the Hill Finklea Detention Center in Moncks Corner nearly three hours after the accident.
Jail records show she’s been charged with felony DUI resulting in a death and for driving with a suspended license.
