According to a new Gallup poll, South Carolina is considered the fifth most religious state in the country.

Who came in first you ask?

Based on the study, that honor goes to the great state of Mississippi with 61% of the population identifying themselves as “very religious.”

Fifty-four percent of the population consider themselves to be “very religious” in the Palmetto State.

The study reported that the most religious areas continue to be the South, the state of Utah, and the Midwestern Plains states, while the least religious areas are mostly in New England, the Pacific Northwest, and other Western states.

As for the state considered the “least religious,” that title goes to the state of Vermont.

According to Gallup, state-by-state results were based on more than 174,000 interviews conducted in 2013, including more than 500 interviews conducted in each state and 442 in the District of Columbia.

3. Alabama: 57%

4. Louisiana: 56%

5. South Carolina: 54%

10. Oklahoma: 49%

11. Kentucky: 49%

Top 10 least religious states

1. Vermont: 22%

2. New Hampshire: 24%

3. Maine: 24%

4. Massachusetts: 28%

5. Oregon: 31%

6. Nevada: 32%

7. Washington: 32%

8. Connecticut: 32%

9. Hawaii: 32%

10. District of Columbia: 32%
