Brian Adams To Remain A Qualified Candidate In Sheriff’s Race

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Brian Adams, who is running for Berkeley County sheriff, will remain a qualified candidate.

On Friday, Bonneau Police Chief Franco Fuda, who is also running for sheriff, attempted to disqualify Adams from the election by filing a petition.

According to Fuda, Adams failed to include his graduation date on the sworn affidavit when filing the paperwork to run for sheriff.

According to state law, this little mishap could disqualify a candidate from running.

At Monday night’s Berkeley Co. GOP meeting, it was standing room only as an executive committee heard from both Adams’ representatives and Fuda.

Before a packed house, Fuda stated that he filed this petition now, so that this issue doesn’t come up later in the general election.

“If it said to put the color of your eyes on there that would be my concern,” stated Fuda. “Affidavit’s are critical. If you don’t file correctly, criminals can go free.”

During the meeting, a strong supporter of Adams spoke on his behalf, pointing out a possible problem with Fuda’s own affidavit, stating that his wife reportedly notarized his.

Executive committee member Cori Merritt, agreed that the issue at hand was trivial but that Adams’ oversight was “not fair to candidates who filled out paperwork correctly and on time.”

After hearing from both sides, the committee then cast their votes: 23 voted “yes” for Adams to remain a qualified candidate, 10 voted “no.”

After the vote, there were plenty of cheers and applause from Adams’ supporters as they left the meeting.

Jerry Merrithew, who is also running for sheriff, congratulated Brian Adams on Monday night’s decision.

Voters will head to the polls Tuesday to vote in the Republican primary for Berkeley County Sheriff.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
