Do you love to write? Are you naturally curious? Do you keep up with current events? If you answered “yes,” then The Berkeley Observer may be looking for you.
We are always looking for contributors who have a passion for writing material that people in Berkeley County care about. Our recent writer landed a job at a local newspaper in the Midlands, so if you’re looking for your break in the “news biz”–writing for The Berkeley Observer certainly can help.
This job is best suited for college students who are looking to create a portfolio and gain journalism experience or for someone who simply enjoys writing in their free time while making an impact on the community.
Here’s what we can promise you:
–A media badge that will get you into events (stipulation is you must, of course, cover the event)
–A byline that will be seen by thousands with every story you write
–A bio under the “About Us” section of The Berkeley Observer
–While this position does not offer traditional compensation, if you were to have a local business advertise in The Berkeley Observer–you could keep all the profits. (But this is certainly not a requirement). If you were to earn more than $600 for a given year you would be issued a 1099-MISC form.
Qualities we are looking for:
–Someone who is curious & takes an interest in current events
–Someone who can check their e-mail regularly & have access to it on their cell phone (we keep in touch regularly through e-mail)
–Someone who has a college degree or is currently working on one.
–Someone who is reliable (most of the stories can be done from remote)
–Someone who is willing to pitch story ideas every once and a while (usually they’ll be assigned)
–Someone who is familiar with Berkeley County
–Someone who has good, basic English skills. In other words, you don’t make it a habit of misspelling words and you know the difference between “their” and “there.”
If you are interested in writing for The Berkeley Observer, please e-mail us your resume, writing samples and cover letter explaining why you would be a good fit.
If you have any questions for us, please feel free to ask them in your cover letter.
In the meantime, check out The Berkeley Observer at www.berkeleyobserver.com.
**NOTE: If you have REAL journalism experience and have worked for other media outlets, reach out to us! We’d love to consider you for paid freelance opportunities.
