BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Miss South Carolina, Daja Dial, will visit Howe Hall AIMS on Thursday, February 11, 2016, at 1:30 p.m. to participate in the school’s Recycled Runway show.
The fashion show will feature 12 upcycled designs created and modeled by AIMS students. This year students focused on the impact plastic shopping bags have on the environment. Fourth grade students will present three garments made from plastic bags, as part of their Kids Who Care project.
The dress Miss South Carolina will wear is made from plastic shopping bags that feature environmental pledges of 4th grade students.
In addition to the plastic garments, students wrote and composed the songs that will be played during the runway show. The songs feature lyrics about the harmful effects plastic bags have on the environment.
Students who participate in the fashion show are in the Costume Design Exploratory class that meets once a week and works on basic sewing skills as well as fashion design. They purchase garments from Goodwill’s clearance center and “upcycle” them into new fashions.
