BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Wendy Smith, 3rd grade teacher and Teacher of the Year at Daniel Island School, received the prestigious InterTech Award for Excellence in STEM Education during the 2016 Conservation Gala at the South Carolina Aquarium.
“I feel both honored and humbled to be the recipient of this award. After all, the progress we have made this year with STEM/STEAM was a team effort. Our principal provided us with the training and the room to grow. Our technology coach inspired us with resources and energy. My teaching team provided ideas and support, and my students came ready with their love of science,” said Smith.
Nominated by the families of her students, Smith was unaware she was considered to receive the award. The South Carolina Aquarium Board of Directors invited Smith to attend the Aquarium’s Conservation Gala. The celebration included an awards dinner and after party.
The InterTech Award for Excellence in STEM Education is given to South Carolina teachers who demonstrate a commitment to STEM education and to educating the next generation of environmental stewards (www.scaquarium.org).
