BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–A Macedonia mother is giving big thanks to a local first responder who says he saved her newborn’s life during a very difficult home birth recently.
“If it wasn’t for this man, I know without a shadow of a doubt that our baby girl wouldn’t be here today!” stated Mary Joyner via social media. “He not only saved her life but he gave us hope when all the odds were against us and for that, I could never thank you enough.”
Macedonia Rural Fire Department Battalion Chief Jerry Hush and several other firefighters responded to the young mother’s house after receiving a frantic 9-1-1 call.
Mary had gone into labor about a week before her due date. Because her baby was ready to come out now, she had no choice but to give birth to her daughter at home.
EMS still hadn’t arrived when Hush and his team decided to help May deliver the baby; however, there were some frightening moments. The baby was breech and at first she wasn’t breathing. Miraculously, that changed and the newborn began to cry.
“Thank you to every one of the firefighters, EMS, my sweet mama-in-love and my amazing man for being there through the most difficult time of my life! You ALL are amazing! To the man in the grey shirt, wherever you are tonight, just know that you truly are our HERO!” Mary posted shortly after giving birth.
While Hush is glad Mary and her newborn, Kyndall, are doing well, no thanks are necessary.
“I’m just doing my job, as any other fireman would do,” stated Hush. To me, I think Mary’s the true hero, giving birth to a complicated birth. She’s the real hero, not me, I was just there to assist.”
