GOOSE CREEK, S.C.—People who call Goose Creek home will soon have another option for buying groceries.
According to Mayor Michael Heitzler, he and other city leaders met with representatives for Walmart Neighborhood Market approximately two months ago. Plans are now moving forward to build a store in the area.
“They were very impressed with Goose Creek,” Heitzler stated. “They think this is a dynamic community with a lot of opportunity here especially with the growth the city is experiencing.”
Heitzler says Walmart Neighborhood Market will be located along St. James Avenue–just a short distance from the Walmart Supercenter in Goose Creek. The mayor says construction crews will tear down the old ‘Butchies by Design’ building to make room for the new store. Specializing in custom home furnishings and decorations, Butchies closed its doors in 2011 after many years in business.
According to Walmart.com, the neighborhood market format offers quick and convenient shopping, with a full grocery department, including organic and natural selections.
Heitzler described the new store similar to Whole Foods Market. At this time, he says he’s not sure when construction on the new business will begin.
“Of the 15 Neighborhood Market locations they looked into, Goose Creek appeared the most together,” Heitzler said representatives with the store told him.
The first Walmart Neighborhood Market opened in 1998, and today there are more than 250 Walmart Neighborhood Market stores nationwide. The stores feature prepared food options, fresh-baked breads, a self-serve deli and a bakery.
Walmart Neighbood Market is said to be the same size as a traditional grocery store and about 70-75 percent smaller than the average Walmart Supercenter.
