MONCKS CORNER, S.C. — Santee Cooper is warning all customers, especially restaurants and other small commercial businesses, of a scam currently operating in the Horry County area. People are calling businesses claiming to be Santee Cooper employees and demanding immediate payment of bills.
Business owners have also been asked for credit card payments or wire transfers. The caller will even leave a callback number that, if dialed, is answered by someone who claims to be with Santee Cooper.
Santee Cooper will not call and threaten to turn a customer’s power off unless payment is immediately made or demand immediate payment over the phone. Santee Cooper employees will always identify themselves and will discuss all payment options with a customer.
If customers have any concerns and want to verify that someone they are speaking with is a Santee Cooper employee, please call 843-347-3399 in Horry or Georgetown counties or 843-761-8000 in Berkeley County.
In general, customers should never provide a social security number, credit card number or banking information to anyone requesting it over the phone, online or in person, unless you initiated the contact and feel confident with whom you are speaking.
