BCSO deputy survives breast cancer, now spreads awareness

officer taylorBERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Each year, October is dedicated to breast cancer awareness, the celebration of those who have fought and won the battle against cancer, and the search for new and innovative treatments.

While many partake in the walks, fundraisers, and events surrounding the efforts to raise awareness, many don’t realize the intensity of the disease. According to the American Cancer Society about 1 in 8 (12%) women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime. Just in 2014 alone, 232,670 new cases of invasive breast cancer are projected to be diagnosed. This disease effects many individuals, including some within our BCSD community.

Allison Taylor, BCSO Deputy and Timberland High SRO, had her own scare with breast cancer. Alongside several members of her family, Taylor dealt with the disease, fought, and is now a proud survivor.

Today, Taylor strives to promote awareness, prevention, and detection through a variety of creative efforts – some involving the students, staff, and community of Timberland High.

For the past three years, Timberland High has rallied around Taylor and supported each awareness effort she has put forth, this year is no exception. Tomorrow night, Friday, October 10th, Timberland High will be recognizing and supporting Breast Cancer Awareness month at their football game.

From the pink socks the players will be sporting, to the wooden pink ribbons constructed with the help of Timberland’s building construction teacher, Ty Darby, it is sure to be a night of awareness, support, and good old fashioned high school football.
