MONCKS CORNER, S.C. — With the first day of school just weeks away, the Berkeley County School District is inviting families to celebrate the start of a new academic year at its annual OneBerkeley Back-to-School Festival, a community event offering free school supplies, food, entertainment and resources for students and parents.
The festival will take place Saturday, Aug. 1, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Moncks Corner Regional Recreation Complex.
The event’s signature giveaway includes 3,000 free bookbags, each filled with basic school supplies. The backpacks will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.
Families will also have the opportunity to visit 22 interactive booths hosted by community organizations and Berkeley County School District departments, where children can play games and win prizes. Additional attractions include jump castles, face painting, the district’s iTow truck and a performance by the Berkeley High School Blue Brigade.
Food will also be available throughout the morning. Berkeley County School District’s Child Nutrition Services will provide free pizza, chicken biscuits, fruit and water, while Kona Ice and Travelin’ Tom’s Coffee trucks will offer additional refreshments.
District officials say the festival is designed to help families prepare for the upcoming school year while connecting them with school programs, district departments and community partners in a fun, welcoming environment.
Berkeley County School District students are scheduled to return to classrooms on Wednesday, Aug. 12.
