Find your unclaimed cash at the state fair

moneySouth Carolinians have more than $425 million in unclaimed money, and State Treasurer Curtis Loftis wants it returned to its rightful owners.

That’s why the Palmetto Payback staff will provide free searches for fairgoers today from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m in the Rosewoods Building at the South Carolina State Fair.

“There are more than a million accounts waiting to be claimed,” said Loftis. “And it takes about two minutes to see if one belongs to you.”

Last year, the State Treasurer’s Office paid nearly 27,000 claims and returned more than $16 million to owners.

Examples of unclaimed property include dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks (including paychecks), unclaimed insurance proceeds, forgotten utility deposits, uncashed dividend checks and unexchanged shares of stock.

“Sometimes people lose track of assets when they move or lose loved ones,” said Loftis. “People can see if family, friends, businesses or charities have unclaimed funds belonging to them.”

It takes just a few minutes to conduct a free search. If money has been identified, Palmetto Payback staff will assist with the claim process.

For those not attending the fair on Wednesday, a free online search is available at any time.
