MONCKS CORNER, S.C. — One of Moncks Corner’s most recognizable community parks is set for a major transformation.
Town officials announced that Lacey Park will close beginning June 24 as construction gets underway on a comprehensive revitalization project that will bring new recreational amenities, infrastructure upgrades and expanded opportunities for youth and adult sports programs.
The project, detailed this week by Mayor Thomas Hamilton, represents a significant investment in the future of the town’s recreational facilities and includes improvements designed to serve residents for years to come.
Town officials have not announced a reopening date, saying updates will be provided as construction progresses.
New Tennis Complex Planned
Among the most visible changes will be the construction of four new tennis courts on the site of the park’s existing courts.
The upgraded tennis facility will also feature a new pavilion and restroom building, creating a more modern space for both casual players and organized events.
Town leaders say the improvements are intended to support future youth tennis programming in Moncks Corner, an effort that will involve consulting with local coaches as plans continue to develop.
Officials also hope the investment will help revive adult tennis league play in the community.
Playground and Bridge Improvements
Families can also expect a new playground to be constructed on the side of the park adjacent to the old hospital site along West Main Street.
Plans call for the playground area to include perimeter fencing, providing an added layer of safety for children and families using the facility.
The project will also include the replacement of an existing bridge within the park, improving accessibility and infrastructure throughout the recreation area.
Roadway Realignment Part of Future Traffic Plans
In addition to recreational improvements, the revitalization project includes transportation upgrades designed to support future traffic improvements in the area.
Murray Drive will be realigned to match Broughton Road, a move town officials say is intended to facilitate future intersection enhancements.
Expanded Parking Planned
The project also includes dedicated parking areas on both sides of the park, helping address accessibility and parking demands during recreational events and community gatherings.
Hamilton thanked Berkeley County for partnering with the town on the development of a parking lot on the side of the park adjacent to the former hospital property.
Investing in the Future
For decades, Lacey Park has served as a gathering place for residents, youth sports participants and community events.
According to town officials, the revitalization effort is designed not only to modernize aging facilities but also to create new opportunities for recreation and community engagement.
Residents are encouraged to plan accordingly as construction begins June 24 and to watch for future updates regarding project milestones and the park’s eventual reopening.
