MONCKS CORNER, S.C. – The Berkeley County community is rallying behind the family and friends of a Moncks Corner firefighter and EMT who recently lost his life in a crash.
Drew Kelly, 22, of Moncks Corner died Friday in an off-duty motorcycle accident, according to town officials. A fourth-generation firefighter, he launched his career in the fire service for the town of Moncks Corner in 2019. He was named the town’s “Firefighter of the Year” in 2021.
“Drew was a skilled and passionate fireman and EMT, dedicating his life to the job and to helping others. He was known for having a light heart and wonderful sense of humor, and for being loyal, fun-loving, and eager to learn,” the Town of Moncks Corner posted to Facebook on Monday. “Drew was a fourth-generation firefighter and genuinely loved being a part of the fire service and serving his community.”
Kelly also served his community by volunteering with the Moncks Corner Rural Fire Department. Colleagues there said their “hearts shattered” when they learned of Kelly’s passing.
“This loss is particularly painful for many. Drew honorably served the citizens of both incorporated and unincorporated Moncks Corner for several years and was loved by so many,” MCRFD posted to Facebook. “Please keep the Kelly family and the Town of Moncks Corner Fire Department in your thoughts and prayers over the next several weeks. One cannot imagine the pain and loss both families are feeling.”
Two GoFundMe pages have been launched to support his family and pay for funeral arrangements. As of Monday, both have raised more than $5,000 combined.
Kelly is survived by his new wife, Roma Kelly, as well as his parents, siblings, nieces, and the entire fire service family. He will be honored with a firefighter funeral on Wednesday, May 17, 2023. Additional funeral details can be found at this link.
