MONCKS CORNER, S.C. — Emergency crews are urging boaters to get off Lake Moultrie immediately as severe weather moves across Berkeley County, prompting multiple water rescues Sunday afternoon.

According to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, Marine Patrol deputies and several Berkeley County fire departments are currently responding to five separate water rescue missions on the lake as a strong storm system creates hazardous conditions.

Officials said the storm is producing strong winds, lightning, heavy rainfall and significantly reduced visibility, making conditions increasingly dangerous for anyone remaining on the water.

Five Rescue Missions Underway

The sheriff’s office issued the urgent warning in a social media post shortly after 6 p.m., noting that first responders are actively working to assist boaters in distress.

Details about the rescues, including the number of people involved or whether any injuries have been reported, were not immediately available.

Authorities emphasized that weather conditions on Lake Moultrie can deteriorate rapidly, potentially leaving boaters stranded or in need of assistance within minutes.

Officials Urge Boaters to Seek Shelter

The sheriff’s office is strongly advising anyone currently on the lake to head to shore immediately and seek safe shelter.

“If you are currently on Lake Moultrie, get off the water immediately and seek safe shelter,” the agency warned via Facebook.

Emergency officials noted that remaining on the lake during severe weather not only endangers boaters and passengers but can also place additional strain on rescue crews operating in dangerous conditions.

Monitor Weather Before Heading Out

As rescue operations continue, officials are encouraging residents and visitors to closely monitor weather forecasts before launching boats or participating in water activities.

The sheriff’s office urged the public to take severe weather warnings seriously and avoid heading onto the lake when storms are in the forecast.

Marine Patrol deputies, firefighters and other emergency personnel remain on the water responding to calls for assistance.

The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office said additional information will be released as it becomes available.
