GOOSE CREEK, S.C.–In the United States, approximately 54 million Americans are disabled—that’s about 20 percent of the overall population.
In South Carolina the percentage was even higher, with 22.2 percent of the population having at least one type of disability.
Over the weekend, some folks in Berkeley County proved a disability can’t keep you from having fun and living a normal life.
On Saturday, the City of Goose Creek Recreation Department along with the SC Department of Natural Resources hosted a fishing rodeo for disabled residents.
The event took place at the lake behind the Marguerite H. Brown Municipal Center.
More than a dozen people took part in the event.
Target (Summerville), Wal-Mart (Goose Creek), Charleston Angler, Charleston Billiards, Ilderton Conversion of Charleston, Moncks Corner Angler, Carolina Bait, Disabled Outfitters, Journey Church and the Berkeley County Legislative Delegation all served as sponsors for the events.
