GOOSE CREEK, S.C. — A new dessert shop built around one of the most familiar pairings at any birthday party — cake and ice cream — celebrated its grand opening over the weekend.

Cakes and Cones, located at 2007 2nd Avenue, Suite C, in the Carnes Crossroads community in Goose Creek welcomed customers for its grand opening celebration Saturday and Sunday, giving the community its first taste of the shop’s homemade desserts.

Morgan, an Ohio native, says she’s been baking since she was a kid. Opening her own shop, she added, was a dream years in the making.

“I’ve been baking since I was about seven years old, so this has been a dream for a really long time,” she told city officials recently in a social media video.

Morgan previously worked at a bakery in Ohio, an experience she said helped inspire her to eventually create a dessert business of her own.

“I worked at a bakery in Ohio, and I was inspired by what they created, and so I decided I wanted to do it on my own,” she said.

The concept behind Cakes and Cones came from a simple observation: Birthday parties almost always include both cake and ice cream, but there were few places where customers could walk in and order the two together.

“Every birthday party has cake and ice cream, and that’s what we wanted to create here, cakes and cones,” Morgan said.

The shop’s signature treat pairs a slice of cake with a scoop of ice cream — the combination Morgan recommends to first-time customers.

The idea also inspired the shop’s tagline, Make every day a birthday. Cakes and Cones is designed as a place to mark major milestones, from birthdays to anniversaries, while also giving customers an excuse to celebrate an ordinary day with dessert.

Community turns out for grand opening

Cakes and Cones announced earlier this month that its grand opening would be held July 11 and 12. Morgan said the response exceeded her expectations.

“I was so excited by how many people showed up,” she said.

The turnout followed an early wave of interest from residents as the shop prepared to open.

“I’m so thrilled by all the support from the community so far,” Morgan said.

The shop aims to combine the feel of an old-fashioned ice cream parlor with a more modern approach. Black-and-white tile floors and retro-inspired décor are intended to create a sense of nostalgia for customers walking through the door.

Morgan said the same attention goes into what the shop serves.

“I believe good dessert should be honest: no artificial dyes, no synthetic flavors, just real ingredients baked fresh every day,” she said. “Every cake and every cone that leaves this kitchen has my name on it, and that means everything to me.”

Cakes and Cones is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at 2007 2nd Avenue, Suite C, in Goose Creek.

For Morgan, the opening represents the culmination of a passion that began when she was about 7 years old — and a chance to turn the familiar tradition of cake and ice cream into something customers do not have to wait until their birthday to enjoy.
