Berkeley County Helps Drive Record Early Voting Surge in South Carolina

More than 56,000 ballots cast statewide on Day 1 — the highest first‑day early voting total ever recorded for a South Carolina primary

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – Berkeley County was one of the top five counties driving a record-breaking surge in early voting Tuesday, as South Carolina kicked off the early voting period for the June 9 primary with unprecedented turnout.

According to the South Carolina State Election Commission (SEC), more than 56,000 voters cast ballots statewide on May 26, marking the highest first-day early voting total ever recorded for a primary election in the state.

Berkeley County ranked fourth statewide, with 2,862 ballots cast on the first day.

Top Early Voting Counties on Day 1

  2. Charleston – 6,788
  3. Greenville – 3,713
  4. Berkeley – 2,862
  5. Horry – 2,476

SEC Executive Director Conway Belangia said the strong turnout reflects growing voter engagement and the accessibility of early voting centers across the state.

“This is democracy in action, and we want to make sure every eligible South Carolinian has the opportunity to be part of it,” Belangia said. “Early voting centers across the state are open and ready — make your plan and cast your ballot.”

Early Voting Runs Through June 5

Early voting for the June 9 primary continues Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., through June 5. Voters may visit any early voting center in their county.

The SEC is encouraging voters to use scVOTES.gov before heading to the polls to:

  • Check their polling location
  • Review their sample ballot
  • Find early voting locations and hours
  • Review photo ID requirements
  • Learn more about absentee voting and election deadlines
