Fishing Trip Ends in Tragedy After Body Recovered from Berkeley County Diversion Canal

Authorities identified the victim as a 66-year-old North Carolina man who had traveled to the Lake Moultrie area to fish.

CROSS, S.C. — A North Carolina man who traveled to Berkeley County for a fishing trip was found dead Friday morning after his body was discovered floating in the diversion canal, according to the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office.

The coroner’s office was notified at approximately 6:55 a.m. Friday, June 26, after the body was located in the canal near Cross.

The victim was identified as 66-year-old Terry D. Settle of North Carolina.

According to officials, Settle and a longtime friend had traveled to the Lake Moultrie area to spend a few days fishing when the incident occurred. Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances leading up to his death.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office, Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, Berkeley County Emergency Medical Services, Central Berkeley Fire & Rescue and Eadytown Fire & Rescue.

The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol assisted with recovering Settle’s body from the water.

An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the official cause and manner of death.

The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office and the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office continue to investigate the incident.
