BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – Inmates at the Hill-Finklea Detention collected a record-breaking amount of trash in 2023, according to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office.
Inmates picked up a total of 94,845 pounds of garbage. That’s an increase of 41,440 pounds of trash from 2022, the sheriff’s office said.
The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office instituted the Litter Pick-Up Program in 2015 for prisoners who are classified as trustees that volunteer to participate in this program.
Under the supervision of detention officers, the prisoners clean up trash from the sides and medians of public roadways and other public areas.
